An Introduction to Giclée

Thank you for your interest in Giclée Fine Art Reproductions.

There are so many issues involved in Giclée printmaking that the process itself has become an art form. Papers, ink combinations, color management, resolution, color profiles and coatings are just some of the variables involved in Giclée printmaking. It is a complicated process, For this reason, we continually act as aesthetic guides for the artist, collaborating with them during the printmaking process. While assisting the artist to make subtle and complex technical decisions about their print project to render the best results.

We are often asked "how will the Giclée print compare to the original art?"

When an artist from China, received the Giclée reproduction that he had ordered, he was terribly offended because he thought someone had rejected his original and sent it back. That's how accurate a Giclée can be, that even artists can confuse the copy from the original.

Are you planning on producing a limited edition in the near future? If so, perhaps we can answer your questions about the Giclée Process and assist you with your project.

Reproducing your fine art is both an art and a craft with a lot of technology thrown in. Our experience in this craft and our eye for quality is your assurance that your reproductions will be as beautiful as your original.

Giclée, coined from the French word, 'gicler' for spraying and 'gicleur' for nozzle, are highly-defined, continuous-tone color reproductions. Similar to the early European craft of printmaking, each print requires more than an hour to produce. Nothing is rushed and every print is finely inspected prior to shipment. Because of this high quality, Giclée prints are being purchased in record numbers by publishers, decorators, curators and collectors and are widely shown and distributed, from galleries, art studios and art shows to the halls of many museums.

Giclée technology has matured to a "print-on-demand" level, whereby a small relatively unknown artist can self-publish without having to stockpile large quantities of prints. Now you can print museum quality Giclée reproductions at surprisingly affordable prices, and sell your work in controlled, limited editions or print small quantities as they are sold. No large investments, and no storage or damage problems.

Artists, publishers and collectors are immediately taken with the exquisite look and feel of Giclée.

Adtech Communications Inc. produces and markets high quality, fine art Giclée reproductions to artists and to galleries throughout the world. Color Reproduction

Understanding color, and that color reproduction systems are not perfect, helps your ability to accept that inevitable variations exist in all color reproduction methods. There are many factors that influence the way color is perceived, such as lighting, media, and pigments, for example, and no person sees color exactly the same as another person. Color reproduction is fluid and differs from one process to another. The color reproduced in a photograph, for example, differs from an offset printing press or from a serigraph printmaker. Even matching color from the same reproduction method is difficult and matching color from one computer monitor to another is troublesome. Be aware that media type affects visual color. An image that was originally painted on canvas will look different when reproduced on watercolor paper.

A Word About Color Transparencies

It has been our experience that not all transparencies are created with the same high standard of quality. For this reason we strongly recommend that you consider sending your original art with your print order. If this is not possible, it is important that you review your transparency before submitting it for reproduction. Inspect your transparency for color accuracy against your original. It is best to examine your transparency under the proper lighting conditions, preferably with the use of a 'high-quality' light-box. Look for evenness of lighting, especially in the corners. Please keep in mind that the three major manufacturers of transparency film, Kodak, Agfa and Fuji use different dyes and media and each have unique color shifts. Our color management system eliminates most color shifting.

Color Corrections

Our scanning process eliminates the need for most color correction. When images require some adjustments to color and tone, the corrections are kept to a minimum to achieve a pleasing color balance. Our experience shows that when large color adjustments are made to the original image, detailed parts are sacrificed and even lost in order to create the proper color.

We use the latest in micro-piezo printing technology and long-life fade-resistant archival pigments to produce our prints. Extensive research has been conducted on the life and fade resistance of these inks and with proper care and lighting, these prints can retain their image quality for well over 100 years and in some cases 200-300 years.

Deep, rich and vibrant colors.

While not every printmaker can reproduce all colors, our process is able to reproduce over 90% of the visible color spectrum. This means that we can achieve colors that most printmakers and commercial litho printers cannot, and we are able to match the artist's work more closely. The resulting images are so intense and life-like that it's often difficult for even the artist to distinguish the copy from the original. Your prints can be further enhanced by using oils, markers, gold leaf, torn edges, even pasted on to make each piece unique. Giclée prints are often sold in galleries with prices ranging from $500 to well over $3,500.
